STUDENT SUCCESS STATEMENT

"Disciplining yourself to do what you know what is right and important, although difficult, is the highroad to pride, self-esteem, and personal satisfaction."

Margaret Thatcher

We get tempted when we're alone to do wrong things and choose the wrong. But self restraint can keep you on the highroad. You want to be on the highroad, you must be on the highroad. To reach pride, self-esteem, and personal satisfaction, you have to go on the DIFFICULT highroad. But in the end it's totally worth it. You feel pleased with yourself when you accomplish something, why not that something be choosing the right? If you put your mind to it, you can do it.

IF YOU PUT YOUR MIND TO IT, YOU CAN DO IT.

Balancing High School and Part-Time work Part 3

Balancing High School and
Part-Time work
Part 3
Brad MacGowan of the Career Center at Newton North High School in Massachusetts thinks that working can be a valuable part of a student’s life, if taken on responsibly.
“You can derive a great deal from working, considerably more than just money,’ he says. “In most cases, you can acquire a nice dose of discipline and a whole new set of skills and experiences.” In addition, your supervisor may be willing to write a strong college recommendation for you. School comes first
Schoolwork, including homework and studying for tests, should always be your top priority. MacGowan cautions students who do decide to work,” If you are rushing through your assignments … or not studying enough for tests because of work, it’s time to cut back or quit and find a less time-consuming job.”

"WHAT YOU ARE WILL SHOW IN WHAT YOU DO."
THOMAS A. EDISON

If you do lazy work then therefore you are lazy. If you do hard work then therefore you are hard-working. It is true because what you do pretty much shows who you are. and what you like is too. For instance, a dude has a shirt of marijuana(weed) then you can tell he likes it therefore he could/would be considered a pothead. If a girl likes girl stuff then she is girly. If a person makes bad decisions usually it means they're bad people. If you do good things all the time then that makes you a good person.

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work Part 2

Balancing High School and
Part-Time Work
Part 2
Voicing your goals to someone else can help you make decisions and figure out priorities. It can also help you judge whether you can do both- work and study- successfully. To help answer this question, ask yourself:
·       Am I an organized person?
·       What kind of study habits do I have?
·       Do I make good use of my available time?
·       Will I be able to manage my schedule effectively if I take on a part- time job?
Think about the pros and cons of working. On the plus side, a job can teach you about commitment, time management, and responsibility- and of course, handling money. On the minus side, a job can cut into the time you have for sleeping, studying, and socializing.

ctw: girl locked in bathroom

GIRL LOCKED IN BATHROOM FOR SIX YEARS.

Girl was locked in bathroom for 6 years by grandparents. She was only allowed to go to school. The living conditions were deplorable and food was inconstant. She was in custody of her grandparents since 2004 and with her 8 year old bro. She is now 9.

REFLECTION OF THIS:

okay so you don't just lock someone away like that. You just don't. I mean what were they thinking lock her away like Rapunzel but they didn't have a tower so they used a bathroom!?!
It's cruel and unusual. I can barely stand being in my room grounded or in detention, this well this would've drove me crazy. I would've gone mad, quite insane. And school only school?! She must have loved school. I can't believe her grandparents would have done this. There is so much cruelty in this world, can't anyone be civil?! Honest it's inhumane and unjust. Poor girl i hope she is well and that she has a free life and never has to be locked up again.

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work Part 1

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work
Part 1

Like many high school students, you may want- or need- to work part time. Working takes a lot of time and energy, though, so before getting a job, make sure that you think about your ability to handle both work and your education.
Important considerations
You have to weigh a number of factors when deciding whether to take on a part- time job. It’s important to get as much information as possible, so you can figure out what choice makes the most sense for you.
Schedule a meeting with your school counselor to discuss the idea of working. Talk to your counselor about why you want to work and what type of position you’re seeking.

ROMAN EMPEROR FROM 161 AD TO 180 AD.

If you know what you are doing is wrong, stop doing it. Something that is wrong to do would be cyber bullying (we're learning in health). That is when you do harm to another individual using the internet or cellphones. If you wouldn't do it in person, don't do it online. Or another example is how people spread rumors that are untrue. Don't lie. Don't do something that isn't right.

Success in AP can also help you in other ways. AP helps you stand out in the admission process and offers the opportunity to learn from some of the most inspiring teachers in the world. Learn more about the AP program.
For More Help in Choosing Courses
Use college search to look up a specific college’s academic requirements to be sure you are on track to attend the college of your choice.
If you have concerns about your class schedule or progress in school, set up a meeting with your school counselor, teacher or adviser.
There are many resources to help you with this process and with achieving your personal, college and career goals. Without goals, you meander all sorts of directions.  Goals give your purpose, direction, enthusiasm, and passion for that which you really desire. Define your goals deliberately, evaluate your goals often and make changes as necessary, work hard to achieve your goals, and continue working hard until you actually do reach your goals.

"IN ANY MOMENT OF DECISION, THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO IS THE RIGHT THING."
THEODORE ROOSEVELT

If you have to make a choice between bad or good, just choose the good. Like say you can open the door for someone because it would be the right thing to do, you should do it while you can. Or how some people are using Y.O.L.O. do to some retarded stuff, you only live once, yeah i get that but it don't mean go out and do something stupid while you can. Do the good things in life before the time runs out. The clock is ticking so you better get a move on whatever you need to do. Make your actions count okay don't let them be meaningless regrets you have, MAKE SOMETHING OF YOURSELF.

Don't waste your time, learn to live the life.

The Arts
Research indicates that students who participate in the arts often do better in school and on standardized tests. The arts help you recognize patterns, discern differences and similarities, and exercise your mind in unique ways, often outside a traditional classroom setting.
Many colleges require or recommend one or two semesters in the arts. Good choices include studio art, dance, music and drama. Many students have talents and extraordinary abilities in the arts. Students should look within their own repertoire of talents and identify their artistic abilities and take college classes to develop their talents.
Advanced Placement Program (AP)
To be sure you are ready to take on college-level work, enroll in the most challenging courses you can in high school, such as honors or AP courses. Research consistently shows that students who score a 3.0 or higher on an AP Exam typically experience greater academic success and college graduation rates than students who don’t take AP.
Work hard in your righteous pursuits, and you will reap the benefits of self-fulfillment and job satisfaction. Don’t take shortcuts just to “get by,” instead, take challenging and difficult roads (courses) and reach higher mountain peaks of achievement.

"TO KNOW WHAT IS RIGHT AND NOT TO DO IT IS THE WORST COWARDICE.'

CONFUCIUS

When you know something you are supposed to do and don't do it. Its in a way a sin. If you can help someone and don't then that itself is wrong. Doing the right thing because you know it's the right thing to do. Being to scared to do good has never paid off. Most people open doors for others when they can and say bless you to someone who just sneezed. Just simple good deeds, we do them cause we know we should. Common sense much?

Social Studies
You can better understand local and world events that are happening now by studying the culture and history that has shaped them. Here is a suggested course plan:
·      U.S. history ( 2 semester)
·      U.S. government (one semester)
·      World history or geography (one semester)
·      One additional semester in the above areas

Foreign Languages
Solid foreign language study shows colleges you’re willing to stretch beyond the basics. Many colleges require at least two years of study in the same foreign language, and some prefer more.

Learning a foreign language can be a challenge but is exciting. Repetition is the key to learning a language, and having conversations with others speaking the same language is the best way to learn this new language. Repetition in a fun way will build your skills thoroughly as you seek to master new languages.

"HAVE THE COURAGE TO SAY NO. HAVE THE COURAGE TO FACE THE TRUTH. DO THE RIGHT THING BECAUSE IT IS RIGHT. THESE ARE THE (3) MAGIC KEYS TO LIVING YOUR LIFE WITH INTEGRITY."

W. CLEMENT STONE

For reals though, don't be afraid to say no. It is your decision and life not theirs so if you don't want to do something then i say you don't do it. Being brave enough to make your own choice is better than letting others tell you how to live your life. Don't be afraid of the truth because a lie can keep you okay but the truth will help you stay okay forever unlike a lie it'll only save you for a moment. And you do the right thing because you want to do the right thing not because you have to, or are told to cause that's not what doing the right thing is about. These are the keys to living laid out in front of you so why not listen to them?

Science
Science teaches you to think analytically and apply theories to reality. Colleges want to see that you’ve taken at least three years of laboratory science classes. A good combination includes two semesters of each of the following sciences:
·       Biology
·       Chemistry or Physics
·       Earth/space science

More competitive schools expect you to take four years of lab science courses. You can add two semesters in one of the following subjects:
·       Chemistry or physics (the science you didn’t already study)
·       Advanced biology
·       Advanced chemistry
·       Advanced physics

Man Returns Stolen Cash to A Sear's 60 Years Later

A man returns money he stole from Sear's from 60 years ago with interest as well. The man paid back all the money and more. He went to the store and gave the money to the Sear's manager.

In a way he chose the right and did good by going back to give it. But he chose the wrong by taking the money in the first place 60 years ago but he did good giving it back because he was sorry. I wonder though, what ran through his mind the day he stole and what he was thinking of all these years.

The following subjects and classes are standard fare for success in high school and beyond, whether you plan to attend a four-year or two-year College.
English (Language Arts)
Take English every year. Traditional courses, such as American and English literature, help you improve your writing skills, reading comprehension and vocabulary.
Math
You need algebra and geometry to succeed on college entrance exams and in college math classes ---- and in many careers. Take them early on. That way, you’ll be able to enroll in advanced science and math in high school, and show colleges you’re ready for higher—level work.
Most colleges look for students who have taken three years of math in high school. The more competitive ones require or recommend four years. Each school has its own program, but some of the courses typically offered are:
·      Algebra 1
·      Algebra 11
·      Geometry
·      Trigonometry
·      Calculus

'Tis the set of the sail by Ella Wheeler 1916

'Tis the set of the sail

Ella Wheeler Wilcox 1916

But to every mind there openeth,
A way, and a way, and away.
A high soul climbs the highway,
And the low soul gropes the low,
And in between on the misty flats,
The rest drift to and fro.

But to every man there openeth,
A high way and a low,
And every mind decideth,
The way his soul shall go.

One ship sails East,
And another West,
By the self-same winds that blow,
'Tis the set of sails
And not the gales,
That tells the way we go.
Like the winds of the sea
Are the waves of time,
As we journey along through life,
'Tis the set of the soul,
That determines the goal,
And not the calm or the strife.

The academic rigor of your high school courses is an important factor in the college admission process. College admission officers see your high school course schedule as a blueprint of your education. They’re looking for a solid foundation of learning that you can build on in college.
To create that foundation, take at least five solid academic classes every semester. Start with the basics and then move on to advanced courses. Challenging yourself is part of what makes school fun; but you need a firm grasp of the fundamentals before going on to more advanced work.

Getting the most out of a session
Here are some tips to help your group get the most out of each study session:
Decide what you’re going to do in advance
Prepare for the session, so you can make the most out of your time together.
Take turns teaching, to reinforce your own knowledge.
Stick to the session topic
By supplementing your individual study with a study group, you can reinforce what you've learned, deepen your understanding of complex concepts, and maybe even make a few new friends. Remember that a friend is a person who encourages you to do your best and to achieve on a high level, one who pushes you to try a little harder and be a little better. If someone pulls you down the wrong trails of life then those people are not friends ( they are actually your enemies), and you must avoid them at all cost. Whoever said learning can't be fun? learning is enjoyable and exciting when you study with others.

“In life as in football, you won’t go far, unless you know where the goal posts are.”
Arnold Glasgow
We all need a goal to know where we’re going and why we’re going there. If you want to learn/ your goal is to learn you go to school. If you choose a specific thing you want to do, or become, you know what you’re doing and why you’re doing just that. So where do you want to go? Why do you want to go there? These questions need to be discussed mentally and emotionally by ourselves. We can’t just go out and bear the unknown. If you want heaven, you do well and worship the lord. If you don’t you get otherwise. Overall we need to really think about what we truly want for ourselves.

The power of study groupsPart 1

The power of study groups
Part 1
Working together helps everyone.
You may have noticed that when you’re explaining something you’ve learned to a friend, you begin to understand it better yourself. This happens because, when you explain an idea, you need to think more deeply about it.
The same principle makes study groups useful. Studying with others in a small group is helpful because you:
· Think out loud
· Share ideas
· Learn from one another
In an effective study group, you and other students hash out lesson materials together—explaining concepts, arguing about them, figuring out why one person’s answer differs from another’s—and in the process, you most likely learn more than you would have by yourself.

Do the reading
You need to do more than just read the chapters you are assigned---------
You’re expected to understand them thoroughly. Here are some tips:
·        Don’t skim. Read all the material carefully.
·        Break up difficult assignments into sections you can digest ---- chapters, subsections or even paragraphs.
·        Look up any words that you don’t understand.
·        Pause to think about whether you understand the material; ask questions in class about anything that is unclear.
·        Take notes instead of highlighting ----- this makes you think through and rephrase the key points.
·        Create a summary sheet of what you learned from each assignment you read.
